The Advent Journey: From Promise to Presence

A 17-Day Christmas Devotional
Theme Verse: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Day 1: December 9, 2025

Topic: The First Promise

Scripture: Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”(NIV)

Cross-Reference: Romans 16:20: “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” (NIV)

Reflection:
The story of Christmas doesn’t begin in Bethlehem. It begins in Eden. When humanity fell, God immediately planted a seed of hope. In His judgment to the serpent, He spoke of a coming victory: the offspring of the woman would crush the serpent’s head. That single sentence became the heartbeat of human history: the promise of a Saviour who would undo the curse.

Even in humanity’s rebellion, God’s mercy was already at work. He didn’t abandon His creation; He announced redemption. This verse is often called the Protoevangelium, that is the “first gospel.” It’s the first whisper of Christmas, the first glimmer of grace.

As we begin this Advent journey, let this truth settle in your heart: long before you ever reached for God, He was already reaching for you. The promise of Jesus was not Plan B. It was always the plan. From the very beginning, God was preparing the way for His Son to come and crush the power of sin and death forever.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being faithful from the beginning. Even when humanity fell, You promised restoration. Let my heart rest in the assurance that Your plans are always good. As I journey toward Christmas, help me see how Your grace has been at work all along. Amen.
